about

The earliest of works to appear on the album, The UK Blues is a "truth hurts" look through adolescent eyes at the appearance of life in Britain for those who do not reside amidst the upper tiers of the socio/economic power pyramid. A simple and trustworthy instrumental is looped throughout so that listeners can just relax and soak up the lyrics. The catchy hook rings true and if this song does indeed give you the blues, then Smiffy has done his job well. But as he lets you know in most of his songs, things will be alright in the end…Do you believe him? Does he believe himself?

lyrics

VERSE 1:
I‘m awoken by the rubbish truck, I rub my eyes and get up
Look out the window more gloomy skies no luck
Last nights drink binge put my stomach on edge
And mum’s calling me for breakfast bacon and eggs
I wedge a rollie in my lips, and head for the front door
Been meaning to quit but I just crave for that one more
I’m smoking on the porch in my shorts and vest
I rest my head against the railings, ain’t feeling my best
I sit and slip into a daydream, my own regime
Picturing drug free teens and big pay schemes
No money struggles I’m wondering what it feels like
But then I’m quickly reacquainted with real life
By a voice from the living room
Adamant orders to find a job by June ‘cause you’ll be leaving soon
I get the blues just thinking about a life of nine to five
But it’s the only means I have to survive
I find it strange how my life seemed to change so fast
It feels like only yesterday I played kiss chase last
The easy years flew past, now I’m to make my own way
And I guess I’ll be OK but it’s hard try’na make it in the UK

CHORUS:
Oh I’ve got the UK blues
I just don’t know what to do
Living life without no clues
And I don’t know which road to choose
I’m just drifting through these times
The sun it never seems to shine
No luck in this life of mine
But one day it will be fine

VERSE 2:
Sometimes I think I couldn’t take another day in the UK
This atmosphere of dull gray hopelessness that we portray
Broken buildings that resemble the hearts of our youth
And still I can’t deny the sour truth
That all I know is these clubs and subways, corners and chip shops
Bus stops and spots where on the sly they shift rocks
Got fiends for friends, thugs for roll models
In a life where we practice only few morals
One by one, we lose the plot and try to put each other’s lights out
Coppers come and beat you while they read your rights out
Under these mundane skies that hover over our lives
Can only hope to maybe someday rise
And find a place where the sunshine’s
We’re in the cold rain chasing the fun times
And feeling no pain, watching from a distance as the world decays
But hey what can I say, you learn to love these old streets of the UK

CHORUS:
Oh I’ve got the UK blues
I just don’t know what to do
Living life without no clues
And I don’t know which road to choose
I’m just drifting through these times
The sun it never seems to shine
No luck in this life of mine
But one day it will be fine

BRIDGE:
It’s just another day, in the UK
The sky outside is looking kinda gray
But I don’t mind I’m try’na find a way
To break through and make my pay, but it’s hard where I stay
It’s just another day, in the UK
The sky outside is looking kinda gray
But it’s OK, I won’t let it take my mind away
From breaking through and making my pay, but it’s hard where I stay

VERSE 3:
It’s just another day in the UK we’re focused, keyboard and drum pads
Try’na make hits we’re just a couple of young lads
But they’re my comrades through all the endless stress
Where many say I’ve gone mad on my relentless quest
To see my dreams in motion, my wishes my hopes and my devotion
To moving on up, I’m getting close and
Approaching every day as a new day, while keeping my faith
So here’s one for the UK
For street corner kids east end to west end
From Edinburgh to lands end this dedicated strictly to them
From any race any place any residence
Not even a president nor a king could keep me from what I represent
These street topics are written to teach poverty stricken
Young lives inside these pockets of Britain
Because it’s true what they say, and I feel the same way
Somebody soothe these blues because it’s hard try’na make it in the UK

CHORUS:
Oh I’ve got the UK blues
I just don’t know what to do
Living life without no clues
And I don’t know which road to choose
I’m just drifting through these times
The sun it never seems to shine
No luck in this life of mine
But one day it will be fine
