about

A trip down memory lane. This song is a 'spoken word' composition about revisiting the past and how innevitable change has the power to provoke a yearning for things you may never have thought you would miss. It is strange what you learn to love...

lyrics

VERSE 1:
Have I really been away this long, my head lowered I traipse along
The roads and all the bricks are worn and everybody’s gone
The shops a different name and landlady she’s not same
No friendly talk for this forgotten face just a receipt and change
My days here as a name have past their warranty
Now they sell mobile phones where the barbers used to be
The snooker club’s been burned down, the bakery is boarded up
Friends; some died, some got married, some got locked up

VERSE 2:
Everything seems smaller, the buildings and the walls
Our scribbled nicknames have faded from the garage doors
My old home is dust and bone
All the houses are neglected and the grass is overgrown
Kicking stones I amble down the steps
Of snaky lane towards the green, the old bench has been kept
The broken lamppost they’ve replaced, but the train tracks have rusted
And the locals speak to mark how much my patoire’ has adjusted

VERSE 3:
My shoes sweep the ground as I sway on a creaky swing
This old park is now a carcass of iron bars and springs
Spark a cigarette, was here I tried my first one
We’d hide behind the slide and pass them round when smoking used to be fun
And I stray spell bound, trying to blow the dust off the lost years
Collecting up the memories like precious souvenirs
I watch the ghosts of my past chase each other down the grass
And laugh as they fade, off to find their scars
