about

Poetic, political, hypnotic, real and very haunting. Originally written to expand awareness of the Sam Hallam case, this song places Smiffy as a spectator at the scene as he visits several victims of differing injustices and makes an impacting commentary. The vocals are a melodic chant, floating over a dark and eerie instrumental. A slow build throughout brings the song to its climax where the lyrical pace is doubled up as our fly on the wall examines his own place on the broken wheel of justice...

lyrics

VERSE 1:
She could sing like an angel, had a flame of grace
No time to lose and a dream to chase
She packed her innocent life into a new suitcase
And wore a good luck charm on an old shoe lace
Her talent went to waste, she never had the face
The [red carpet smile or the size six waste
And you can still see a flicker
when she drinks her liquor
And you can still see a flicker when she drinks her liquor…
On the broken wheel of justice

VERSE 2:
There’s a child in the graveyard, a killer in the hills
And a father with a hand full of sleeping pills
Three long years and still no clues
What difference does it make either way you lose
For the system can never replace what’s been lost,
And they could throw away the key but it wouldn’t pay the cost
How many innocent have died
down a long dark ride
How many innocent have died down a long dark ride
On the broken wheel of justice

CHORUS 1:
Your eye for my eye, these scales are worn
Man is his own worst nightmare and our swords are drawn

VERSE 3:
On faraway shores they send you to war
And they made you believe what the killing was for
And who knows the truth, I’ve heard there are things they hide
And I know it wouldn't be the first time they’ve lied
Wasn't it them who told us two wrongs don’t make a right?
How can they justify the casualties of this tired fight?
But now your body’s in the mud
How they used your blood
Now your body’s in the mud, how they used your blood
To paint the broken wheel of justice

VERSE 4:
How much power do the people hold
Age old is the struggle for control and gold
The poor man sweats for the fat cat’s gain
This has always been the way, this is how it will remain
And it’s one for you and two for me
The balance tips when real hunger is eclipsed by greed
For few make the rules
But they wont use their tools
For few make the rules but they wont use their tools
To mend the broken wheel of justice

CHORUS 2:
Heroes and villains, fools and kings and pawns
This world has grown wild, when will God mow the lawn?

VERSE 5:
Wicked and vengeful, trouble and strife
Lived on the wrong side of goodness for most of my life
The, sense of guilt flows deep
Should I try and rediscover some virtue on this old scrap heap
Where I cast all my honour, my principles and beliefs
Been the mainspring of more than enough grief
I owe it to society to show I can triumph over the trend
And make amends I guess until then
Who am I to write my song?
Of right from wrong?
Who am I to [write my song of write from wrong?
On a broken wheel of justice...

A broken wheel of justice…
